How to master golf fundamentals.
...It is easy-peasy with this great drill.
Introducing!!!
golf fundamentals
I love this drill as it puts the feel of the best golf fundamentals back into my muscle memory. It allows the beginner to feel the simplicity of these mechanics and it gives the experienced golfer the chance to feel how the machanics should work.
I prefer to use a shorter shafted club for this drill as I usually hit a few balls with this grip at the end of the exercise. That is of course if I have the luxury of having a practice range available.
The main difference I feel when I am doing this drill with a club instead of with a rope, is that the rigid club shaft does not flop onto your back at the end of the backswing or follow-through.
Because of this the club gives me much better feedback during the transition period from backswing to downswing. I do this drill to feel that moment.
So what is it that happens?
I feel that my legs, hips, shoulders, arms and hands have already started the downswing, although 95% of the feedback comes from the webbed part between my right index finger and thumb.
What I feel is that the club is still travelling back and there is a definite resistance or lag to be felt. The great thing with this drill and grip is that I can't really react to this and I am very much along for the ride.
As you can see in the above pictures I am in very impressive positions in each and there is certainly no evidence of manipulating the club with my hands or arms.
As a matter of fact my golf fundamentals are looking rather special if I dare say that about my swing. However if you look closer at the middle picture you will see that I am using the webbed part grip and I cannot manipulate the club at all.
This drill has enabled me to get my normal swing to look like this too and the great part is, it is achieved with feel.
I'll leave the lasts thoughts on this drill to Timothy Gallwey, who points out in 'The Inner Game of Golf ,
"Our muscles don't understand English and our thinking minds don't really understand hand-eye coordination."
